I just got a JR Reynolds bass and a Fender Frontman 25B complete with the chord, stand, nice soft Fender bass case (wow it even has straps for carrying it on your back, and a zippered pocket, quality here!, and he even through in the cord. Oh' Who is 'he'? He happened to be a customer of mine. I cleaned the carpet in his living room, hall and steps. As we were talking music came up and he mentioned I check out the bass he had when I was finished cleaning. He liked my marvelous work and so he offered to pay me either $100 ( $20 more than I was asking ) or take the whole kit and caboodle. Being a musician I knew it wasn't super quality stuff. He probably bought the entire set-up gave up on playing. So my review of the bass? Surprising, the bass has good tone. The sustain could be a little better, but this is due to the lighter poplar body and bolt on neck. On the other hand it's lightness contributes to the tendency for it to resonate when played through the amp at moderate to high levels. The pick-ups are quiet ( no buzz/noise) and are placed well. The frequency response of the pick-ups more than cover the range of the bass, and the output level is adequate. The tone and volume controls on this JR Reynolds bass interact with each other. Some people like this interaction and some don't. At full volume though, the tone control is even and does roll off the highs gradually when lowered. Playing through the Fender amp is not the ideal amp to fully test this instrument, but just as my customer purchased the lot he did- for learning and playing with his pre-recorded music ( incidentally the 25B amp has L&R inputs for any line source- it's patched straight to the power amp section so it does not effect the bass controls)...most people who buy this entry level bass will buy better equipment as time goes on, but I recommend that one buy a better amp first, as this bass is certainly capable of supporting the bottom end even in a band setting. Playing live poses different issues though and I strongly recommend pulling off the pick guard assembly and shielding the entire cavity including the back of the pick guard with metal shielding adhesive tape, then ground this to the bridge. My favorite bass is a Japanese Crown bass which is a replica of a Gibson SG bass, it was made in the late 60's- early 70's. To pass on a tip from my experience with the Crown I own, I did install a genuine Gibson Pick-up from a real SG bass ( note: I know the SG bass is called something else, but everyone knows what an SG is and it looks like one). This was a simple mod and it indeed sound like a genuine Gibson Bass after this. Lesson- sometimes cheaper instruments can get the job done if they are approached right.
